Preparing Your Backyard Grill for Moving

You have a great backyard grill and want to take it with you to your new home. Unless you are hiring professional movers, you will need to take careful steps to ensure it arrives at your new home intact.  If you want to enjoy your grill for years to come, read our tips and tricks on how to prepare it for the move.

Gather the Right Supplies for Packing the Grill

Before you start packing a home grill for relocation, you need to get the proper packing supplies. Begin gathering them at least a week prior to the relocation. To start, you will need proper gloves for handling the grill. Next, you should find some sturdy moving boxes. You need one large box for the base of the grill and some small ones for the detachable parts. Many people spend money on purchasing new ones, but the fact is that you can find free moving boxes in a lot of places. Just make sure that the boxes are whole and are not damaged. If you place items in a damaged box, it is likely to break during transport.

You will also need heavy-duty tape, markers, and some plastic wrap. Make sure you write what is inside each box so that you have an easier time unpacking and locating it afterward.

How to Prepare the Grill

You need to prepare your grill before moving, especially if you are moving a long distance.  Although a barbecue usually has heat-proof handles, the base and lid can reach high temperatures when using it. Therefore, don’t try to pack it right after use. It will need some time to cool down. You may also want to clean your grill thoroughly before moving it.

Remove the Charcoal Before Moving Your Grill

Remove charcoal briquettes or gas tank from the grill. If your grill is a gas grill, unscrew the attached propane tank at its base, and empty the fuel. You don’t want to transport combustible or flammable substances on any moving truck. Also, it may also be unsafe to keep it in your own vehicle for extended periods of time. And if your grill uses charcoal, make sure to remove all the briquettes from beneath the rack. This will make your grill much lighter and easier to move.

Detach all the removable parts, racks, and utensils from your grill and pack them all separately. This will not only lighten the barbecue and make it easier to transport, but it will also prevent loose parts from rattling around inside it. This way, you will avoid scratches or damage.

Wrap the grill properly to protect it from scratches. In case you have a particularly valuable grill, made of stainless steel, for example, you may want to protect its surface from dents or scratches. Hence, better wrap your grill in a protective moving blanket and secure it with packing tape to prevent damage. This will keep your grill’s lid closed during transfer. And don’t forget to leave any handles and wheels uncovered so you can move your grill more easily.

Since barbeque grills are usually pretty valuable and expensive, you will want to protect it during transport. Start by preparing a large moving box. Then, place plastic bubbles or packing paper inside the box. Put the grill inside very carefully and add a protective layer on top and on the sides. If you are looking for a faster and easier solution, you can simply wrap the grill in a moving blanket and tape it securely. It should be enough to prevent any dents or scratches during the move. Finally, make sure that the lid of the grill is properly and completely closed. If there is no lock on it, you shut it by using duct tape. An open lid could move during the moving process and possibly break.
